Many thanks.

I think Bob might have just put it back up.

When I looked for it previously, only the listing of COs was there, the RSMs seemed to have fallen off. (Then again, I might've been 'confused'.)

I'm pretty sure that when first formed as a squadron, the SSM was seconded from the RTR and the same applied re the first RSM. Should all be clarified in the 1 Armd Regt book being prepared by the Regt and SoA. (Not mine, which only deals with Vietnam...but a publication similar to that recently produced by the SoA.

Cheers, bruce

The RSM listing is located in the Orderley Room section of the site.

Gillie was born 12 September 1915. I think there are some who were born earlier, but they served earlier and weren't 54 (as Gillie was) in-country.

As always, I could be wrong and would be pleased to if there was someone else who should be acknowledged in this way.

Happy to provide Gillie's contact details if you wish...he maintains a boat down in Victoria.

I believe that he was the first Australian RSM of 1AR (Tom Hanley being seconded from the UK). He was certainly the oldest Australian to serve in Vietnam. I encouraged the Head of Corps Cell at Puckapunyal to do an oral history with him to record his WWII and post War experiences and I think that they have done so.

farao 'afternoon Bruce, Isn't it strange how what went around comes back around....well summat like that.
I had not played indoor bowls since I departed RHQ 2/14 QMI back in the early sixties.
Three or four years back our local indoor bowls team secretary rang me up and wanted to know if I'd like to be part of the team, no experience necessary, they would coach me to the necessary level, if interested.
I told her okay, neglecting to mention that once upon many years ago I had been quite proficient at that version of the holy game.
Come Friday night practice, I toddled down to the local Memorial Hall and as I walked inside it felt just like being back at the Moorooka drill hall on Wednesday afternoons and lunch hours; they even had a table tennis setup for warmup would you believe.
Rolled the first ball, off the end of the mat, embarrasment big time; second ball, directly behind the jack just touching it. Ho boy!!! didn't I get some strange looks, even more so when the next 'un lined up close by.
So now, I'm a team regular.
Makes one wonder at the sagacity of the old " fall off the horse or bike" adage, hey??
Dunno where you are "Buck" Buckle, but you taught me well corp.
Just a dab of trivia there.

Hi Rip,

It's peripheral to my book, but I was interested to learn that when 1AR was made up to a regiment, the first RSMs were Brits until Gillie was deemed suitably qualified.

The 1AR website no longer lists the RSMs...I'll ask if they could put them back up. Tom H may have followed Gillie, but I seem to recall someone saying that he was a Brit.

farao Good evening Bruce, Thanks for that, not that I am too sure when a-nomading again we shall go; the last big-un took a lot out of us.
I wasn't aware that Tom Hanley was a to and from; he didn't sound all that much like he was; more like one of Bazza Mac's mates from Earls Court; most likely time has dimmed one's memory.
There was one Pom with us for sure, a Bill Buckle who taught me how to really play table tennis and indoor bowls during our lunch hours and Wednesday arvo sporties against other nearby CMF units.
Great days with top blokes.

farao G'day Ian, I can recall having two RSMs at Moorooka; the first one was Tom Hanley of WW2 vintage, do you remember him? The second was the redoubtable Wacka Gilchrist who at one stage resided in his caravan beneath the large water tower on the drill hall premises....and therein hangs a long suppressed funny story.
I'm fairly sure that Wacka was my first armoured RSM with Lt Col Coleman in the old Pucka lines as a newby from 1RTB.
Would that be about right.

MECHANICAL DUCK - JOCK INGLIS

Post  MaccaV on Mon Nov 28, 2011 9:10 pm

Good evening Blue,
Jock was RSM at the Appy School in 1956 when I was there so I doubt if he was SSM of Dribbly Troop later on, unless of course he got busted!! I thought at one stage he was RSM of 2/14 QMI at Moorooka. He was out by June 1964 and was Secretary of the Vic & Tas Public Service Provident Society when I outlaid 3d a week in a Mortuary Fund to cover my demise. Are you still at the Servo?

farao 'evening Blue, Yep I remember wee Jock but never had the pleasure of working with him and can't say where he got to.
In 1961 I was with the cadre at 2/14QMI Moorooka ( WO1 Wacka Gilchrist, RSM) and then moved out to Wacol to join the larrikans of A Sqn 2/14QMI with WO2 Rolly Chick SSM and Maj AEG Strong, Sqn CO/OC.
In 1971 in RVN I had extended my 2nd tour with 1st FDT, hosted by the tank squadron, with Troop Ldr Capt Chas Sutton and Troop Sergeant Major WO2 Dudley Tudman.
